The whole family are camping in the grounds of a northern Retreat House. There is a lot of fun and laughter as they explore the surrounding coast and countryside during a hot week in August.
Little memories that the children will remember for a long time…driving over the woos (a very hilly road), moles hanging on a fence by their noses (the work of a local mole-catcher), one of the children rolling out under the side of the tent at night and waking up in a soggy sleeping bag in the morning rain.
The husband will remember them too, with a mixture of fondness and sadness.
When they’re not doing things with the children, the wife goes off alone a lot. Husband and wife rarely talk about anything other than arrangements. They are ‘Alone Together’ (ironically, one of the catch-phrases of this particular Christian Community.
Although none of them know it then, this will be the last holiday that this particular family ever have together.
