A Short History of Divorce 10…Holiday

The whole family are camping in the grounds of a northern Retreat House. There is a lot of fun and laughter as they explore the surrounding coast and countryside during a hot week in August.

Little memories that the children will remember for a long time…driving over the woos (a very hilly road), moles hanging on a fence by their noses (the work of a local mole-catcher), one of the children rolling out under the side of the tent at night and waking up in a soggy sleeping bag in the morning rain.

The husband will remember them too, with a mixture of fondness and sadness.

When they’re not doing things with the children, the wife goes off alone a lot. Husband and wife rarely talk about anything other than arrangements. They are ‘Alone Together’ (ironically, one of the catch-phrases of this particular Christian Community.

Although none of them know it then, this will be the last holiday that this particular family ever have together.

The affair is over.

She has decided to stop seeing ‘the lover’. The relationship was unsatisfactory.

The husband breathes a sigh of relief and looks forward to a time of less complicated rebuilding of their relationship. It is the school summer holidays, time to be all together as family.

A Short History of Divorce 8…Free

One night he’s at the rink alone. The ice is almost empty of skaters. The music is good, and soon he’s skating freely, large circles on the ice, completely caught up in the insistent, joyful beat of the music.

He is completely absorbed in the sacrament of the present moment, timelessly unaware of anything but the music, the ice, the swish of skates and the flexing of muscle.

The music changes and the absorption ends.

He hasn’t felt so clean, so free, so alive, for a very long time.
